There will always be a few who don't realize the dangers and the difficulty in vhs transfer and video conversion and will try to do it themselves! If you do the conversion yourself you are asking for trouble! Want to be a hero and do it yourself?? Well you can try copying the footage onto computer formats as well and maybe save a buck or two. Depdneding on your DVD drive is how fast the burn will take.
ORRRR... the other option is called the nuclear option; this is when your home movies are converted with a DVD/VCR converter to gauge how much film you will lose during the video converion process. This is almost the most dangerous and destructive of the video options out there. Make sure that you find out if it is a good use of your time and if your family mind if you ruin their home movies before you attempt to do this yourself.
