Ethics for Video Professionals

Learning Film made easy

1.                  The book assumes that the majority of people will die in the future without a formal advance directive.

2.                  It is assumed in the healthcare arena that families should have no say in the final decisions because they are usually self-serving and don’t really care for the dying individual.

3.                  According to legal theorist Patricia White, people find it difficult to predict accurately how they would react to some hypothetical future crisis.

4.                  Women tend to be assigned an unequal share of caring labor when a family member has become disabled.

5.                  The issue of withholding and withdrawing artificial nutrition and hydration from dying patients remains contentious.

6.                  For patients who have hopes of recovering, withholding artificial nutrition and hydration is still a moral issue.

7.                  Providing artificial nutrition and hydration is often viewed by families as providing care.

8.                  Hunger and thirst are alleviated by artificial nutrition and hydration.

9.                  Healthcare providers must recognize that the final authority in the patient-physician relationship is the patient (or their legal surrogates).

10.              Clinical evidence supports the fact that artificial hydration is likely to heighten the discomfort of a terminally ill patient, and often heightens underlying symptoms.

11.              Families should have no input into the final decisions regarding the dying process of a terminally ill person.

12.              The most reasonable response to surrogate issues would be have a system with descending order of priority if the patient wants family to have decision-making ability.
